"Joseph was the owner of seven whaling ships which flew the blue-white-blue, vertically-striped "house" flag of Joseph's company... They brought barrels of whale oil back from the Pacific. This was processed into lamp oil (until the discovery of petroleum in PA just before the Civil War eliminated this market). He also owned a candle-making factory attached to the processing plants.
