| Meeting | gathering of Friends (church), also called Meeting for Worship | Meetinghouse | Place where Friends worship, each with its own name (for example, "Clear Creek Meeting" in Illinois) |
Monthly Meeting | Because Quakers do not have ministers, Meeting business is held in a Monthly Meeting once a month with a Clerk, Recording Clerk, Treasurer, Committees, and Meeting members. At Monthly Meeting all business proceedings are recorded. There is a wealth of information in these Meeting Minutes (recordings) intention to marry, marriage, deaths, births, membership, and visitors. | Preparative Meeting | A Meeting for Worship that has not yet established itself as a fullfledged Meeting. Until this Meeting can be self contained, it relies on an established Monthly Meeting for it's business. | Men's Meeting/Women's Meeting | Since the end of the last century men and women meet jointly for worship. Men's Meeting means Meeting for Worship with men and boys present and Women's Meeting meant Worship where women and girls were present. Women at Clear Creek Meeting in McNabb, Illinois, sat on one side of the large Meetinghouse and Men's Meeting was held on the other with wood shutters which would open dividing the two Meetings. | Quarterly Meeting | A group of Monthly Meetings gather four times per year (sometimes more, sometimes less) to discuss, worship, and socialize | Yearly Meeting | Monthly and Quarterly Meetings gather once a year to discuss, worship and socialize. I attended Illinois Yearly Meeting, usually held at Clear Creek Meeting, McNabb, Illinois for many years from the time I was a child through my early adulthood. Adults met, discussed issues of concern (human rights, sufferings, war, etc.) while women often sewed and worshipped. Kids also met each other and discussed issues of concern to them (often mirroring the concerns of their parents). I learned from letters that my North Carolina ancestors went to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. | Birthright Friend | A Friend by Birth | Convinced Friend | A Friend who has decided to become a member of the Soecity of Friends. | First Day School | Sunday School. Remember, the days of the week (and months) are pagan in origin. Friends called Sunday First Day, January First Month, etc. |
